What to do in Maui
Some of our favorite activities include:
1. Haleakala
Explore this majestic mountain as you pierce through the clouds to get to above 10,000 feet above sea level! People do the sunrise but the sunset is beautiful as well! What's most amazing is as you hike here, just how quiet it is. There are multiple trails to explore but if you are looking for something relatively easy and quick, yet gives you the most amazing views, definitely do the Leleiwi Overlook Trail. The hike out is about 15-20 mins one way.
TIP: If you do decide to stay for sunset, stay another hour or two for an amazing view of the stars at night. It is simply breathtaking!
TIP: It gets cold - cloud be close to freezing!!! Keep a warm jacket. Given many don't bring their winter jackets to Hawaii, make sure wear long selves, long pants/jeans, and a hoodie. Layer up - it's always easier to remove layers when hot vs not having an option when it's really cold!
2. Whale Watching/Boating/Snorkeling
If you are there end of January/February, congratulations! Your fellow travelers will include the Humpback whales that have migrated to the Hawaiian waters for giving birth. These whales put on quite the show! If not, don't worry. Either way, Maui has some more amazing snorkeling adventures.
3. Road to Hana... and beyond
The drive to Hana is a very popular activity. But it does bring it a lot of curvy driving. From what I have hear, some like it and some think it may be too much with kids. We dropped the idea and spent time at the beach instead. There is pliantly of information on this so see what best suites you.
4. Kanapali Beach
Beautiful!!
5. Whalers Village & Black Rock Beach Sheraton
We loved the sunset at the Sheraton. A drink by the bar with live music and the sunset overlooking two mountainous islands in the ocean was the ultimate Hawaiian relaxation! Right before sunset, there's a torch lighting ceremony at the Sheraton.
6. Lahaina/Banyan Tree
Evenings well spent! You can catch your whale watching tours from here.
